Hi, this is my first tab guide on this site, so if I make any mistakes with the regular
layout, you'll have to forgive me.
Anyway, being a user of this site for a few years now, I know the majority of you, like myself,
don't read these little introductions here and just look straight to the tab, which is
fine, haha.
But for those of you reading this, then I just want to say why I'm doing this.
I've read several tabs for this song over the web so far, and it seems most of them are
similar to the song,
but not actually correct.
So I went and learnt it properly by using my experience with guitar and just listening
to the right notes.
I'm sure you'll find this is quite accurate to the original, so enjoy.
CAPO: 1st Fret
This song is pretty much a C chord for the majority of it.
Just repeat this until you hear the root note change (The stars gleam, the poets dream)e|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|B|---1------------1--------------1-------------1-------------------------------|G|------0-----0-------0-----0--------0-----0------0-----0----------------------|D|---------0-------------0--------------2------------2-------------------------|A|---3---------------------------3---------------------------------------------|E|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
Okay, it starts getting a little tricky here, but if you read my advice, you'll be able
to pick it up with a little practice.
Basically, the way you want your fingers is in the C chord shape, but with the finger
next to your pinkie, off the string.
When it comes to the 2>3, you take the finger next your pinkie and place it on two, and
pluck it once.
Then you slide it to 3 while still playing the arpeggio with your other hand. Then for
the low E string,
you want to bring your thumb over the top of the neck to play the 1st fret of the E string.
This is probably the trickiest part of the song, but with a bit of practice, it becomes
second nature.
(The stars gleam)e|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|B|---1------------1--------------1-------------1-------------------------------|G|------0-----0-------0-----0--------0-----0------0-----0----------------------|D|---------2-------------2--------------2------------2-------------------------|A|---0----------------2->3-----------------------------------------------------|E|-------------------------------1---------------------------------------------|
(The poets dream)e|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|B|---1------------1--------------1-------------1-------------------------------|G|------0-----0-------0-----0--------0-----0------0-----0----------------------|D|---------2-------------2--------------2------------2-------------------------|A|---0----------------2->3-----------------------------------------------------|E|-------------------------------1---------------------------------------------|
(The eagles fly)e|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|B|---1------------1--------------1-------------1-------------------------------|G|------0-----0-------0-----0--------0-----0------0-----0----------------------|D|---------2-------------2--------------2------------2-------------------------|A|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|E|---0------------1------------------------------------------------------------|
(Without you)e|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|B|---1------------1--------------1-------------1-------------------------------|G|------0-----0-------0-----0--------0-----0------0-----0----------------------|D|---------0-------------0--------------2------------2-------------------------|A|---3---------------------------3---------------------------------------------|E|-----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
You repeat this phrase again until the second time Mimi sings without you.
That right there is pretty much it for most of the song.
I'm not 100% sure on what the key change is for the part where Roger comes in, so I
wouldn't feel right trying to teach you what it is.
But the chords I use that seem to work fine are Am, E, F and G.
Anyway, that's it for my tab, I hope it helps you guys out and I hope you enjoy playing
Without You by Rent :)
