The guarania is a paraguayan style of song created by a musician called Josй
Asunciуn Flores in 1925. He wanted to find a music to express the character
of the paraguayan man beyond that expressed by the polca and its
derivatives, so he developed a combination of slow rythms and melodies,
some that were melancholic and others of an heroic character. Since its
appearance the Guarania has turned into a phenomenon of major
significance in paraguayan music of the 20th century. This genre has an
extraordinary acceptance. Its author, after succesive investigations, planned
a symphonic way of guarania, creating orchestral poems, songs with symphonic
accompaniment and finaly symphonic poems of universal transcendence. Soon
numerous composers adopted the Guarania as a form of expression, increasing
its repertoire so that it enjoys great popularity in urban centres, but not
in the countryside.
